Thirsty Thursday: A Biologist's St. Patty's Day

Saturday is St. Patrick's Day. Honestly, this holiday never struck a chord with me. Perhaps this is because I am not a big drinker and there seems to be an unusual emphasis on alcohol (hence the multitude of pub crawls in the area...). This does not change the fact that I enjoy a good, nerdy drinking song (complements of one my creative friends...):

But, really, in all seriousness. Historically, this Christian holiday is an Irish 'feast' day that falls during Lent, and allows for a reprieve from the month-long austerity. Celebrated for at least a millennium, the holiday only in the past couple of centuries gained a parade and drunken debauchery. As a feast day, food is obviously a central component. We think corned beef, Irish soda bread, and cabbage, but it seems like as long as you dye the food green, you are good to go.
