My Munchable Soapbox: Below the Line

Dear Reader,

This May 7th-11th I am undertaking to "live below the line," subsisting on $1.50 a day. For a week, I can spend no more than that amount per day on sustenance. While only a taste of what many people around the world experience, this week is meant to increase awareness and support around these issues.

Why am I doing this? At work I feel like I am constantly confronting statistics on hunger and poverty. Nearly 1 billion people live in chronic hunger and a little over that number live in extreme poverty. But do I have any sense of what that really means? If ever hungry, there are countless ways I can obtain food. I have the privilege of a good education, the good fortune to be gainfully employed, and the freedom to be sitting here at a computer writing. This endeavor will hopefully provide a dose of perspective, however small, on my current existence.

How can you help? Please consider supporting the cause, and helping me raise awareness and funds. Any sum donated will go to the Rainforest Foundation, an organization with the mandate to protect the rights to land and resources of indigenous people in Latin American tropical forests. The foundation works to improve both the communities' livelihoods as well as the health of the ecosystems.

I will be posting on relevant topics every Wednesday leading up to the week, and updates on my experience during. Keep visiting! Comments are welcome. And you can start following @YumMusings on Twitter now.

Thanks for your support!
